The fountain of youth: Do supplements for anti-aging work?

The pursuit of the elusive fountain of youth has been a timeless endeavor, and while the concept of stopping the clock is beyond our reach, emerging research suggests that certain supplements may play a role in promoting healthy aging. This article delves into the world of anti-aging supplements, exploring key nutrients and compounds that show promise in supporting overall well-being and graceful aging.

Collagen peptides
Collagen is a crucial protein that provides structure to the skin, hair, and nails. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Collagen peptide supplements, derived from hydrolysed collagen, may help replenish and maintain skin elasticity, promoting a more youthful appearance. Studies have found positive effects on skin elasticity (Asserin et al., 2015), the reduction of wrinkles and signs of aging (Borumand & Sibilla, 2014), and the stimulation of collagen production (Oba et al., 2018).
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoQ10 is an antioxidant that plays a vital role in energy production within cells. As we age, the body's natural CoQ10 levels decrease, impacting cellular function. Supplementing with CoQ10 may support cellular energy production, potentially improving skin health and overall vitality. Studies have suggested that CoQ10 can help improve wrinkles and skin aging (Inui et al., 2016), protect against photoaging, and support skin health (Žmitek et al., 2018).
Resveratrol
Resveratrol, found in red wine and certain fruits, is known for its antioxidant properties. Limited research suggests that resveratrol may have anti-aging effects by promoting cardiovascular health (Mattison et al., 2012), contribute to neuroprotection (Rahman et al., 2020), and have the potential to increase lifespan (Howitz et al., 2003).
The verdict: Based on the quality and reproducibility of the few studies that support the use of resveratrol for anti-ageing, it seems highly unlikely that taking it will increase lifespan.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish oil, have been linked to various health benefits, including supporting brain health and reducing inflammation. Incorporating omega-3 supplements may contribute to cognitive function (Yurko-Mauro et al., 2015), longer telomeres (Farzaneh-Far et al., 2010), and skin aging (Cosgrove et al., 2007).
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for bone health and plays a role in immune function. As we age, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels becomes crucial for preventing aging-related diseases (Pilz et al., 2019), and cognitive decline (Littlejohns et al., 2016).
Turmeric and curcumin
Turmeric, specifically its active compound curcumin, has been studied for its potential anti-aging properties, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Chronic inflammation is associated with aging and age-related diseases. Supplementing with turmeric or curcumin may reduce cellular senescence, a process associated with aging (Wang et al., 2016), improve memory and attention (Small et al., 2018), and reduce the effects of skin photoaging (Vaughn et al., 2016).
NAD+ precursors
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair. NAD+ levels decline with age, impacting cellular function. NAD+ precursor supplements have been suggested to potentially reduce the buildup of senescent cells (Zhang et al., 2016), improve muscle function, mitochondrial activity (Gomes et al., 2013), and improve cognitive function (Gong et al., 2013). In particular, limiting senescent cell build-up has been associated with increased longevity.
The verdict: Based on the quality and reproducibility of the few studies that support the use of NAD and its precursors for anti-ageing, it seems highly unlikely that taking it will increase lifespan.
Final thoughts
While the quest for eternal youth remains a poetic ideal, incorporating certain supplements into a holistic approach to health may contribute to graceful aging. Before starting any supplement regimen, consult a healthcare professional to ensure they align with individual health needs and potential interactions with medications. Embracing the aging process with vitality and well-being is the true essence of the anti-aging journey.
